Book fairies love meeting authors, and it’s even better when those authors become book fairies to hide their own book! Katharine McGee enjoyed her stint as a book fairy in Houston!
A book fairy in Houston, Texas, had the chance to meet with author Katharine McGee to induct her as a Book Fairy for a Day! Here is the story of the event, in Catie’s own words.

Copies of American Royals hidden by the author herself!
We were fortunate enough to spend the day with the author, Katharine McGee, and hear all about what brought this book to fruition while dropping copies of her books American Royals and The Thousandth Floor around Houston. Katharine wrote a sweet note and signed each copy of the book.
About the author Katharine McGee
Katharine used to live in New York and worked as a book editor on some really fun projects like Pretty Little Liars and The One Hundred. She always knew she wanted to be a writer so she started working on a concept that would end up becoming American Royals. The concept began in 2012, soon after the wedding of Kate and William that took place in 2011.
The birth of American Royals
Before the wedding, Katharine got a text from a friend about a royal wedding viewing party that Kathie Lee and Hoda were hosting. So, the morning of the wedding she got up early (here in the state’s the wedding was around 6 am) got dressed in her best royal attire and then went to the party at a restaurant in NYC around 6 am where fascinators were everywhere and mimosas were flowing.
“It was such a fun morning!” she said. “There’s so few moments in the modern world that draw people together unconditionally, but this was pretty purely happy.” And it’s true! Many of us can remember that day and how excited we all were, celebrating this couple, getting caught up in the magic, imagining ourselves marrying a prince one day, or just pretending we were royal for a moment. After this experience, Katharine started thinking about just that-how everyone in America was so excited and they weren’t even our royals, but wouldn’t it be fun if we did have royals!?
About the book:
Crazy Rich Asians meets The Crown in this completely addictive modern-day royal romance. The Washingtons have ruled America for almost 250 years.
They’re gorgeous, fiercely famous and the beating heart of the most glorious royal court in the world.
But behind the glittering ballrooms, elegant gowns, and seemingly perfect public personas lie forbidden romances and scandalous secrets.
Together four young women will navigate gossip, drama, and the eyes of the world upon them.
There’s everything to play for – but there can only be one queen. This is the story of the most famous family in the world. This is the story of the American royals.
Katharine McGee shares her thoughts
The initial version of the book was going to be a bit darker and edgier but she ended up setting it aside, and wrote her other series-The Thousandth Floor instead. This series has those darker, edgier elements to it. Eventually she worked out the concept and American Royals was born.
“There is something really fun and enchanting about a world where America has a monarchy. I always gravitated toward stories where young people were finding their place in the world. It didn’t need the dark thriller element and so instead I brought it to a romance place. And although it was never likely America would have a monarchy, it’s not outlandish.”

That is truly where the magic lies in this book. Although it’s not real, it COULD be real and it’s always fun to immerse ourselves into that “What if?” when we’re reading.
Katharine McGee meets a fan
The best part of the day was meeting a lovely fan who came over to us as we were prepping the books and pulled out her OWN COPY OF THE BOOK FROM HER PURSE. (What?!!) She just happened to be reading it and didn’t even know the author lived in Houston, let alone would be out and about that day with the book fairies.
It was such a joy to watch this unfold and the two got lost in conversation about the book. I just love the connections you can make or help bridge while being a book fairy and this day was the perfect pairing-book fairies and Katharine McGee, both just wanting to spread a little magic to people’s lives. Katharine’s second book in the American Royals series will be coming out in the fall and we can’t wait to read it!
