black beauty giveaway from the book fairies for self isolation

The Book Fairies get 100 copies of Black Beauty into the hands of isolated readers

While we are staying home along with everyone else, book fairies are having to find new ways to spread magic – first off, Black Beauty!

Celebrating Black Beauty on Anna Sewell’s Birthday

Monday 30th March marked the birthday of author Anna Sewell. The Book Fairies teamed up with Wordsworth Books to share a whopping 100 copies of the classic (and a particularly beautiful edition, too!).

Changing the way we shared the magic

We would normally be out and about, hiding books in plain sight for lucky finders! However, in the current circumstances we had to find a different way to do it – and we certainly weren’t going to give up! We decided to run a UK draw and we had such a great response 🙂

What we offered for our first Book Fairy Draw!

About Black Beauty:

Black Beauty tells the story of the horse’s own long and varied life, from a well-born colt in a pleasant meadow, to an elegant carriage horse for a gentleman, to a painfully overworked cab horse. Throughout, Sewell rails—in a gentle, nineteenth-century manner—against animal maltreatment. Young readers will follow Black Beauty’s fortunes, good and bad, with gentle masters as well as cruel. Children can easily make the leap from horse–human relationships to human–human relationships, and begin to understand how their own consideration of others may be a benefit to all.

If you weren’t lucky enough to get a copy this time, you can still find this Wordsworth Edition on Hive Books for a very good price – and you’ll be supporting independent bookshops that need you at the moment! Click here to buy Black Beauty on Hive Books.

Some happy winners!

“Bless The Book Fairies who are spreading bookish joy during this surreal time with their fab competition. This beautiful edition of Black Beauty, published by Wordsworth, dropped through my letterbox and really cheered me up.”

“I seem to have, partly through sheer luck, partly by design, begun the journey to being a book fairy. What a beautiful book! Look forward to reading and then hiding it for someone else to enjoy when we can all be out and about again.”

  • Share your #bookfairyrecommendations on social media
  • Print out and colour in these book fairy sketches
  • Prepare books with stickers and ribbons, ready to hide later in the year
  • Find a free social media card here to use for your book fairy updates
  • Stock up on your book fairy goodies (and get a free seed card!)
