Our 7th pick for our BLM Book Fairies activity is this delightful YA romance novel from Nicola Yoon.
“If people who were actually born here had to prove they were worthy enough to live in America, this would be a much less populated country.”

Our 7th title for #BLMBookFairies is The Sun is Also a Star by Nicola Yoon, a fast-paced Young Adult romance! This is another refreshing YA read with rich characters to discover – and a great plot that all takes place in one day!
A book fairy review:
I loved this book. I wouldn’t normally pick up a book aimed at young adults but I’m so glad I did! This is a refreshing, eye-opening, painfully romantic story that all takes place in one day. In fact, I found the format reminiscent of David Nicholl’s novel, which I also loved.
The characters are so well drawn that the reader truly cares about their back stories as well as their fate. The tension throughout is the threat of Natasha’s deportation, but what grasps the readers’ interest soon turns to her new relationship with Daniel. The joy of being there at the beginning of their relationship is that they share everything, and we get to learn about their families, both of which have some real cracks to fix. We also get to live in New York City for the whole of the story – and it’s so real to the city you can almost feel it.
About a book:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Nicola Yoon is back with her second book, and just like Everything, Everything, it’s an instant classic with a love story that’s just as intense as Maddy and Olly’s–get ready for Natasha and Daniel.
This book is inspired by Big History (to learn about one thing, you have to learn about everything). In The Sun is Also a Star, to understand the characters and their love story, we must know everything around them and everything that came before them that has affected who they are and what they experience.
Two teens–Daniel, the son of Korean shopkeepers, and Natasha, whose family is here illegally from Jamaica–cross paths in New York City on an eventful day in their lives–Daniel is on his way to an interview with a Yale alum, Natasha is meeting with a lawyer to try and prevent her family’s deportation to Jamaica–and fall in love.
